ROXY’S color packets, Creative Craft Kits, themes and Kid’s Curriculum all meet the core competencies for child development.
This tip sheet will serve as a guide for using Roxy’s color packets.
Color Packets
1. Encourage individual creative expression. Allow children to decide what they want to do with the color sheets. They can choose to use pencils, crayons, markers or chalk. They can decide to scribble or detail. They can decide their choice of colors.
2. Value the process of creating as more important than the end product. Apples do not need to be red.
3. Give children opportunities to make meaningful choices. Children can use tempera paint, pudding, koolaid (add a little water to unsweetened powder), colored glue, water colors and wet chalk all to create different textures on the color sheets.
4. Support and encourage children’s participation in a variety of activities. The children can cut out most of the color sheets and paste to other papers and cardboards. They can combine different color sheets to make murals and other scenes. Children can cut out the objects and glue to popsicle sticks to make puppets. They can make up a story about their puppets. You can mount pictures on cardboard and punch holes around the outside. Sew with yarn or shoelaces. Combine to make a book.
5. Select materials appropriate to the development levels of individual children. Tape a color sheet on the highchair and watch the toddler scribble and have fun with a fat crayon. Three year olds will enjoy coloring the picture to take home to mom and dad. By cutting strips of construction paper and gluing them to all sides to make a frame it helps the children develop their cutting skills. For 4-5 yr. olds color sheets can be made into cards by cutting them out and gluing to 9X12 construction paper that has been folded in half. Let them write messages on the inside. How about books for the children? Fold a 9x12 sheet of construction paper in half and place color sheets inside. Staple the edge or punch holes and tie with yarn. That way they can add to the book. Encourage the children to write stories about the pictures. If they are to young for that have them narrate a story to you for their book.
Core competencies define what providers need to know and be able to do to provide quality education and care.
