Getting Kids to Snack Healthy
Kids can learn to snack healthily and happily. Here are some steps that will help children eat healthy snacks:
- Set an example. Eat healthy choices yourself.
- Buy more nutritious snacks from Roxys, ex. All Bran Honey Oat Bar (408478), Sugar free Strawberry Fruit Bar (755622), Whole Wheat Pretzels (792359).
- Make it easy to eat a healthy snack. Purchase ready to eat bags of fruits and vegetables, such as baby carrots.
- Purchase bit-sizes snacks in individual bags to limit quantity, ex. Snack Mix (405704), Strawberry Physedible Crackers (406920).
- Instead of pop, make ice-cold water in individual serving size and 100% fruit drinks readily available in the refrigerator (223870).
- Have your children help you prepare the snack. They will be more likely to eat the peanut butter celery sticks if they had a hand in creating them. Other examples bake Roxys cut-out cookies and have the children decorate with yogurt and raisins.
- Slowly introduce low-fat versions of foods. For example try 2% milk instead of whole milk. The motto to teaching your child to snack healthy is moderation. Dont totally ban all sweets and less nutritious food. Control the amount of sweets and how often they are available. This not only encourages healthy snacking, but also teaches your child/ren to control eating less-nutritious foods.
